DEWALT 20V MAX 7-1/4-Inch Miter Saw (DCS361M1) Review
I’ve used the DEWALT 20V MAX 7-1/4-Inch Miter Saw for trim work, quick repairs, flooring cuts, and the kind of renovations where dragging a cord and a full-size saw through a house gets tiring real fast.
This saw only weighs 31 pounds, and that lighter weight is a welcome relief (especially as I hit retirement age). It may not be my primary miter saw, but it is a must have for the small jobs!
Quick verdict
Quick verdict
I’d buy this as a trim and saw for small quick jobs, or as a second saw for a builder or handyman who already owns a larger slider. The 8-inch crosscut capacity handles most 2x material, baseboard, casing, and smaller crown work. But don’t mistake it for a 10- or 12-inch saw and what they can do. Wide boards, big crown, long stock, and all-day production work still calls for something larger.

Henry’s Notes
Henry’s Notes
This miter saw package includes a 4.0Ah 20V MAX battery, charger, carbide blade, material clamp, blade wrench, dust bag, and of course, the saw itself. DEWALT rates the battery for up to 183 cuts in 2×4 pine or 275 cuts in 3-1/4-inch pine baseboard. That might be somewhat useful as a reference, not always the reality. A dull blade, cold battery, wet lumber, or rushing the cuts will knock those numbers down. I’ve found the saw is best for trim and light framing cuts – where its small size makes hauling it onto the job so much easier!

Pro's & Con's
Here’s the rundown of what I liked most, plus a couple of things worth knowing before you buy.
Pro's
- The cordless setup saves real time on trim jobs and quick repairs.
- The included 4.0Ah battery and charger mean you can cut right out of the box (and you don’t need to own other DEWALT tools).
- An 8-inch crosscut is plenty for most 2x4s, 2x6s, casing, baseboard, and smaller crown molding. You can cut 2×8, but it’ll kill your battery fast!
- At roughly 31 pounds, it’s much easier to carry than a typical 10- or 12-inch sliding miter saw.
- The 11 positive miter stops make common angle changes quick, and the cam-lock handle feels solid.
- The shadow cut-line system works but I never use it. I still verify the mark myself, especially on expensive trim.
Con's
- The 7-1/4-inch blade limits you on wide boards and larger trim. But that’s to be expected with a saw of this size.
- It’s single-bevel, so some compound cuts take more flipping and repositioning than they would on a dual-bevel saw.
- The base doesn’t give large workpieces much support. Long stock needs a stand or separate supports.
- Battery runtime depends heavily on the blade and material. Don’t expect the advertised cut count with a dull blade or hard lumber.
- The dust bag helps, but indoor cutting still makes a mess unless you connect a vacuum.

This comparison focuses on DEWALT’s larger 12-inch sliding miter saws rather than the DCS361M1, but it’s still useful if you’re deciding whether portable convenience is enough or whether you need full-size capacity.
Henry’s recommendation
Henry’s Recommendation
I’d put this saw on the shortlist for finish carpenters, remodelers, flooring installers, and serious DIYers who are tired of hauling a heavy corded saw, “and the extension cord” from room to room. It’s especially handy for door and trim installation where you might make a few dozen cuts, pack up, and move on. The smaller blade is the tradeoff. If you regularly cut wide stock, large crown, or bevel in both directions, step up to a larger dual-bevel slider instead. For light trim work and quick repairs, this DEWALT saw is perfect.
Tool FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What comes with the DEWALT 20V MAX 7-1/4-Inch Miter Saw kit?
The DCS361M1 kit includes the saw, a 4.0Ah 20V MAX battery, charger, carbide blade, material clamp, blade wrench, dust bag, and user guide.
What is the maximum crosscut capacity?
The saw has an 8-inch crosscut capacity at 90 degrees. That covers most 2×4 and 2×6 work, plus common trim and baseboard sizes.
Can it cut baseboard and crown molding?
Yes. DEWALT lists capacity for up to 3-1/2-inch baseboard and 3-5/8-inch crown molding. Larger crown or nested compound cuts may require a bigger saw and a different setup.
What blade does this miter saw use?
It uses a 7-1/4-inch blade with a 5/8-inch arbor. Use a blade suited to the material. A fine finish blade is a poor choice for repeated framing cuts because it requires more force and drains the battery faster.
How many cuts can one battery charge provide?
DEWALT lists up to 183 cuts in 2×4 pine or 275 cuts in 3-1/4-inch pine baseboard. Actual results change with the blade, material, temperature, battery condition, and how hard you push it.
Is this a replacement for a full-size sliding miter saw?
Not for heavy production work. A 10- or 12-inch saw is the better choice for wide boards, large crown, long stock, and all-day cutting. This smaller DEWALT makes more sense for trim, remodeling, small jobs, and projects where portability matters.
Does it use a laser guide?
No. It uses DEWALT’s integrated cut-line system, which projects the blade’s shadow onto the material. It doesn’t need laser calibration, although I still check the blade against my pencil mark before cutting.
Is this saw single-bevel or dual-bevel?
It’s a single-bevel miter saw. If you make a lot of compound cuts in both directions, a dual-bevel model will save you from flipping the workpiece as often and save a lot of time.
What battery does it use?
It runs on DEWALT 20V MAX batteries. The kit includes one 4.0Ah battery and a charger, so you don’t need an existing DEWALT battery or tools to get started.
What warranty comes with this saw?
DEWALT lists a three-year limited warranty, one year of free service, and a 90-day satisfaction guarantee. Check the current warranty terms and exclusions before buying.
