Solar Tube Project

1

There are several terms for a solar tube: some call it light tube, tubular skylight, light tubes, sun pipe, etc. However, all agree that solar tubes are an ideal solution for homeowners who desire to live sustainably and energy efficiently. Solar tubes are „devices“ for lighting up the interior of your property without the need for electricity. They use solar power which makes them an ultimate cost-effective and eco-friendly home improvement. There are countless benefits of solar tubes: they significantly reduce power consumption and, therefore, cut the bills while contributing to the quality of the environment.

Installation of the solar tube

Choose the right location for the window
Sunlight comes through the tube and enters a living space through a special skylight. To use the tube to its full potential, you should choose a correct place for a window. You will probably need to adjust the location once you fit the tube around the rafters.
Detect the area for tube
After you located the hanger, make sure the area is safe and remove the presence of anything that could hamper the tube. The tube needs to fit perfectly between the timbers of the attic and the rafters. Angle the skylight to avoid hip or valley rafters and be extra-careful with electric and plumbing wires or pipes to prevent any damage.
Incorporate the deflector and place the dome
A crucial element of a solar tube is a light deflector. It collects the sunlight and redirects it through the tube to your interior. Therefore, it is a core part of the entire tube system. Incorporate the deflector and position it to the south so that it could capture the most sunlight.
Position the dome over the flashing and pin it down. However, be careful not to over-tighten it since you could damage the tube.
Create a hole for the bottom tube
Go back to the marked „hanger“ hole in the ceiling of your chosen room. It is time to cut the circle out and create a real hole for the light to enter. For this step, you should use a jab saw and cut the edge of the circle and then follow the marked line.
Connect the tubes
If you measured everything correctly, you should be able to mend the top and bottom tubes together. Use an aluminum tape and seal the seams of tubes together utilizing a brayer roller to cling them firmly. Secure the overall tube with drywall screws before completing the installation.
Complete the Installation
Now you finally got your tube; you should hop on the ladder and push the tube back into the attic. Align the tube so that the tube diffuser is in line with the ceiling. Secure it with screws but, again, be careful not to overtighten the nails. Finally, pull off the film coating and let the sunlight in your home!
